Wright's Basketball Scouting Report Bishop O'Dowd vs Salesian Scrimmage

The Northern California high school basketball season is here. Saturday morning I traveled to Richmond Ca. to get my first look at two traditional Nor-Cal power house programs participate in a scrimmage. It's Just a scrimmage I didn't come to any conclusions the season has just begun. Bishop O'Dowd and Salesian Prep.

This was the first action against another opponent, neither team was burning up the nets, Salesian did manage to out score Bishop O'Dowd 11/6 after one qtr. In the 2nd Bishop O'Dowd seemed to be looking at some of the other players that might be able to help seniors Will Chavarin a 6'3 combo guard, Iniko McNeil 6'0 guard and Brendan Patrick 6'0 guard, experienced players from last years squad that graduated two DI players. 17/8 Salesian. The third qtr both teams agreed to play zone defense. This is where Salesians size and length was most noticeable to me in their 3/2 zone match-up. They're long armed wings contested 3 pt shots beyond the 3 pt line and made shots more difficult. 19/8 Salesian. The fourth qtr was more Salesian style basketball, they like to exert full court pressure on defense, trap and force turnovers that lead to easy baskets. 17/5 Salesian.

My Take: Bishop O'Dowd is replacing two DI players from last years team It's going to take some time for this team to find it's identity, mean while Will Chavarin a 6'3 combo-guard, Iniko McNeil a 6'0 guard and Brendan Patrick a 6'0 guard will have to carry the load until some of the underclassmen like the three Sophs. Marsalis Roberson a 6'4 lefty with some athleticism, Jarin Edwards 6'3 big body and Taj Phillips 5'8 point guard can define their roles on this team.

My Take: Salesian is led by seniors Jaden and Jovon McClanahan. The 5'10 twins are always in the mix disrupting on defense, getting steals that lead to easy baskets, knocking down shots or attacking the basket with nice finishes. Together they are tough to play against

Salesian has size Manny Adeoye a 6'9 senior rim protector and good defender. Demarshay Johnson an athletic 6'7 Soph, looks to take up some playing time. Tejon Sawyer a 6'8 , hard to guard Junior post player( DNP football) gives this team good inside depth.

The depth of this Salesian team can't be over looked. Tyler Brinkman 6'4 Jr, continues to improve as a player he can hit the mid-range and shoot 3's. He's long and active. Shane Bell 6'3 Jr, a reliable, long armed wing player, he's a slasher, finishes well, good mid range shot and defends. Landen Manuel a good shooter. Miles Savage 5'11 Jr guard. I think Miles is going to surprise folks with his play, keep an eye on this prospect. Austin Johnson a 6'2 freshman. I always like to see freshman playing varsity play the game without the fear of making mistakes or hesitation.
