Wright's Basketball Scouting Report from Sac-Joaquin Section Champioships.

Saturday evening I traveled to Golden 1 Center in Sacramento California to scout and evaluate players participating in the SJS Sectional Championships with their high school teams before they transition into aau basketball. There were two games of particular interest to me. The first was Weston Ranch from Stockton Ca, taking on a Central Catholic team from Modesto Ca. The second was a highly anticipated and expected clash between Sheldon from Sacramento and Modesto Christian from Modesto.

Game 1: Weston Ranch defeats Central Catholic 67-42.

Myles Clayton: A 6'7 guard/forward 2021 prospect. This prospect didn't have his best day stat wise. 6 pts, 6 rebs and 2 steals., but he continues to show that he is an up and coming prospect with his ability to handle the ball, see over defenders in transition and make good decisions. His mid range and three point shooting will improve, he has good form and he can attack the basket off the dribble. Dayton Magana; A 5'8 pt guard 2020 prospect brings energy and determination, he's always moving and attacking whenever the opportunity presents itself. He was the leading scorer for his team with 18 pts. Weston Ranch's starting five is pretty good. 4 of the 5 are underclassmen. In my opinion they're all guards and can handle, push the ball and pass. Devin Small 6'0 2019 guard has been leading this young group all season scored 13 pts he had some nice finishes. Titus Haley 5'8 pt guard 2020, when he wasn't pushing the ball and running the offense, he was spotting up and knocking down 3's, he had four 3's for 12 pts. Mi'Son Coilton 6'0 guard 2021 also showed his ability to handle the ball and attack the rim, he also looks like a rebounding guard he had 13 rebounds and 15 pts. Donjae' Lindsey 6'1 2021 guard. 6pts, 4 rebs. It wasn't his best stat day but don't be fooled Donjae' can play. He attacks and finishes at the rim, he has a nice pull up and can hit the 3, and a good on ball defender, he has presence. Last but not least is Gavin Wilburn 6'3 guard 2020. This prospect is a guard playing the post area for this team. He has the same qualities as the other guards, he just does it after he grabs the rebound. He has a solid body that allows him to get to the basket. He had 11 pts, 8 rebs.

Game 2: Sheldon defeats Modesto Christian 64-61.

Both teams have prospects who will play at the next level. Modesto Christian's Aaron Murphy 6'7 forward 2019, will attend UC Davis, he contributed 13 pts and 10 rebs. In the first qtr he dominated the boards. Dathan Satchell 6'3 guard 2019. I've always liked the quick release on his jumper, kind of streaky but he can shoot, he contributed 18 pts, 6 rebs. Michael Pearson 5'9 2020 pt guard. Pearson has been a solid performer all season for this team. He runs the offense pretty good but also seems to score crucial baskets when this team needs them, clutch free throws included, he contributed 10 pts. Earv Knox 6'0 pt guard 2019. A solid contributor usually finds a way to help this team, does a good on the point, has a nice pull up, solid defender. Devin Day 6'3 guard 2022. I'm always impressed with freshman playing varsity. Solid contributor off the bench, oh! by the way he can shoot. Knocked down two 3's off the bench for 6 pts. Alex Merkviladze 6'8 forward 2020. As the season has progressed he has become the go to guy in the post for this team. He's big and doesn't mind the contact, finishes well around the basket. Solid performer 13 pts, 8 rebs.

Sheldon has the deepest and most athletic team in Nor Cal. This team was missing their two tallest players Josh Morgan 6'11 2019 (Long Beach State) and Marcus Bagley a top 2020 prospect. Kaito Williams 6'2 guard 2019 (Cal State East Bay) scored 13 pts and seemed to enjoy playing lock down defense down the stretch. Justin Nguyen 5'9 pt guard 2019 continues to be a solid facilitator for this team. 13 pts. Had a key steal late in the game. Xavion Brown 6'2 guard 2020. I wonder what his vertical is? He had two nice dunks. Good defender gets a lot of deflections with his long wingspan, at some point he will be a top defender. Needs to improve body language, 6pts. Josh Williams 6'3 guard 2020. Solid body, Plays with energy, good post up guard, attacks the rim aggressively and has good hops had 10 rebounds. Xavior Brown 6'4 2020 guard. Plays with a certain calmness and confident in his abilities , nice pull up jumper good defender, good football player. 8 pts 6 rebs. Brennen Newsome 6'8 2020 foward. Because of injuries I got a chance to see more of him, He's improved, getting stronger has good fundamentals, has an up side, could be a late bloomer! 6 pts. Darren Tobias 6'6 2020. first time seeing this prospect, very active, has that bounce we always talk about, made some key plays down the stretch, rebounded and defended. My player of the game. 9 pts.
