Wright's Basketball Report. NorCal Prospects At The 2019 Pangos All-West Frosh/Soph Camp.

The 2019 All-West Frosh/Soph Camp at Lynwood HS in Southern California known as the best camp on the West Coast had over 260 participants. The majority of the prospects were from the LA Area. The States of Arizona, Alaska, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, Washington all had prospects competing at this event. Fresno from the Central parts of California, had a good number of prospects as well. Since I've been going to this event, this may have been Nor Cal's largest number of prospects about (65) to participate in this 3 game format, in hopes of making it to one of the 3 All-Star games. Nor Cal prospects played good basketball and competed at this event. I made every effort to see as many Nor Cal prospects play as I could. These 6 Nor Cal players were selected to play in the Cream of the Crop Games.

I have to start with Jaylen Thompson 6'6 2022, St. Joseph's Notre Dame (Alameda Ca).

This rising prospect served noticed that he's one of Nor Cal's top 2022 prospects to start the season, and soon to be on the radar of many outside of California. He was top 5 in the camp. He is coming along nicely since I first noticed him last year. He's spent the grassroots season playing with Team Arsenal 16u out of Oakland Ca. Getting the opportunity to play on the perimeter, and having added muscle to his 6'6 frame. His game has risen to another level, his handles in the open court and his ability to create his own shots, as well as his decision making was on display. He stayed within the flow of the game, didn't force shots, made good long strong passes to team mates and was a consistent performer all weekend. Played in the Top 30 Cream of The Crop Game

Jalen Lewis 6'8 2023, Bishop O'Dowd (Oakland Ca)

I had heard there was a good Freshman entering O'Dowd, but hadn't seen him play. (Team Lillard 15) He got off to a sluggish start in his first camp game, (I watched him play 4 games) It didn't take him long to adjust and get going. He showed why he has the potential to be a top prospect for the next couple of year's in Nor Cal hoops. At 6'8. He's big thick and aggressive. He moves at a decent pace for now. He started playing with force, being physical, handling the ball in the open court, and going anywhere he wanted to go, in this case to the basket for points. Has 3 point range and will shoot it. He has a bit of a mean streak that will help him and Bishop O'Dowd in the paint. Played in Top 30 Cream of the Crop Game.

Jordan Pope 6'2 2022, Prolific Prep (Napa Ca)

I had Pope as one of my top performers for day one action. He looked like one of the top 2022 Nor Cal prospects that he is. Nothing too flashy, but has a certain kind of flair in the way he plays. He can score it multiple ways, and his ability to pass and find open teammates is underrated. He showed his range by knocking down long 3's with some consistency. Played in the Top 30 Cream of the Crop Game.

Varrick Lewis 6'3 2023, Monterey Trail (Elk Grove Ca)

I didn't notice Varrick until Sundays games. I was watching court 2, he was playing on court 3. I glanced over and saw him knock down a 3 point shot with good shooting form. I looked up again and he knocked down another 3 point shot. He's got good size he runs the floor with purpose in transition, to either spot up on the wing for a 3 or take it strong to the basket. In the half court he is always ready to shoot or attack, both he did with some consistency. He played his way into the top 30 game. I will get a better look at him in October at the Elite 8 in Sacramento.

Joaquin Battle 5'8 2023 Salesian Prep (Richmond Ca)

Battle is always in attack mode. He looks to push the ball at every opportunity, looking for his mid-range pull up jumper that was consistent all weekend. When 5'8 point guards are always moving it hard to keep track of where they might end up. He did a good job creating opening for himself and team-mates on the drive. Played his way into the Final 20 Game.

Trey Knight 5'11 2022 Moreau Catholic (Hayward Ca)

A solid prospect with a strong body type. He showed good patience while looking for his spots to attack. He can settle the offense, that's not easy in this setting. Works well in the half-court sets, uses the pick and role well. Most likely a pass first point guard but can break down the defender and create opportunities for himself and team-mates. Played his way into the Final 2o Game.
