Wright's Basketball Report.
Wright's Basketball was in attendance Saturday April 17 at a private run event held in San Jose, CA. The teams were a group of high school prospects from San Jose, and the East Bay. It was the South Bay vs East Bay. It was a nicely run event, with good competition, and a good group of players from NorCal playing on both sides. Here' my report and prospect break down on the event last nigh in San Jose Ca.
Top Prospects: ( * indicates the highest consideration for this Category)
*AB Gilcrest 6'1 Combo Guard of Newark Memorial HS. 2021
A quality combo guard with plenty of speed, and scoring ability. His handles are good, he has good vision and he gets the ball up court in a hurry, by long pass or dribble. He has good body control, and balance on the drive. His shot making at mid-range, and 3pt land were going in at a reliable rate.
Kenny Harper 6'3 G/F of Valley Christian HS. 2023
Harper is a prospect with a good upside to his game. He's still sharpening his skill set, but has a strong body and decent handles to play on the outside, and has some effect inside, he goes up strong inside for finishes.
*Alex Ma 5'9 Point guard of Castro Valley HS. 2022
A slick handled , shifty point guard is oozing with confidence . His tight handles, and passing skills were on display at this event., He delivered long passes up court to teammates in stride for layups. He keeps the big off balance with floaters, and off hand finishes inside. He can hit the 3pt shot.
Shea Mattox 6'0 C/ G 6'0 of Valley Christian HS. 2023
Mattox brings good intensity to the court. The hard charging guard played as hard as any player on the court at this event. He has good hard dribble with the ball, he runs the court hard, and plays good hard man defense.
He has a good mid-range jump shot.
Josiah Morris 6'2 G/W of Newark Memorial HS 2022.
Morris has top defender written all over him. He has the attitude, athleticism, speed, length, and some other intangibles that make him a top defender when he's locked in. He has some offense to work with, He'll run court in transition, he has a quick first step on the drive. A guard that will rebound.
*Chris Naulls 6'6 F/PF of Christopher HS 2023
A rising prospect in the 2023 NorCal Class. He's showing a good upside to his post and mid post game. He had good footwork and a couple of nice face up moves making him a legitimate threat in the post area.. He can hit the elbow jumper, and step out and shoot a 3pt shot on occasion. He's filled out a bit, grown a few inches, and has some presence on defense. He'll rebound in his space.
*Jaden Paran 5'10 PG of Archbishop Mitty HS 2023.
Paran has put on a few pounds, and showing more balance to his game. He looked good getting teammates involved early, and often with his vision, and no look passing at this event. He was dropping dimes to cutters, and slasher most of the game. He splits the double, runs the pick and role, and has deep 3 range.
*Jurren Sparks 6'6 W/SF of Castro Valley HS.
A long slender prospect with a nice frame to build muscle. He showed good activity inside going after rebounds, altering shots, and defending stronger players. The lefty has a good jump shot in the key. He spent some time on the outside, using his dribble along the baseline, and looking to shoot his shot if open. His long strides filling the lanes in transition was notable.
